Mayo Clinic Health Coaching draws on the expertise of Mayo Clinic experts in behavioral psychology, preventive medicine, endocrinology, nutrition, sports medicine
and internal medicine, and incorporates Prochaska & DiClemente's stages of
change theory.
Mayo Clinic Health Coaching programs draw on the experience of lifestyle coaching counselors and the expertise of Mayo Clinic medical specialists in behavioral psychology, preventive medicine, endocrinology, nutrition, sports medicine and internal medicine for developmental direction for our programs. Program modules integrate the latest scientifically supported behavior change theory with our clinical experience to help participants make lasting changes in their health habits.
Research demonstrates the value of modifying health interventions based upon the individual’s stage of readiness to change. Designed around this stages of change model (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1998), our lifestyle management coaching programs help enrollees move along a continuum of change from not thinking about change to contemplating change, preparing to change, taking action and maintaining change.
This approach is combined with a shared decision-making model for better results. Shared decision making between counselor and program participant — as opposed to a practitioner dispensing advice — is truly patient-centric, taking into consideration the needs, values and preferences of each participant.
This approach differs dramatically from traditional lifestyle management coaching programs that use an inflexible directive style, which is often met with resistance and has proved ineffective for long-term behavior change. Studies show that those who commit to change in a program with a self-management component are more likely to succeed than are those who are “told what to do.”
The combination of medical and behavior change expertise sets Mayo Clinic Health Coaching apart, and provides your people with the knowledge and skills they need to sustain change.
