Informed Treatment Decisions

A survey of users of our employee health decision programs demonstrates the power of our interactive Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth Health Treatment Decision Guides. The programs' shared decision-making approach helps people better understand their conditions and gain confidence to make treatment decisions. This employee health resource is an integrated component of the Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth portal. Our treatment decision programs combine guidance from Mayo clinical experts with patient stories in text, video and audio formats.

The survey gathered responses from a sampling of 5,004 users of the programs over a one-year period between June 2007 and May 2008. Highlights of the Treatment Decision Guide survey include:

• 86% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides provided answers to their health-related questions.
• 77% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides provided new information about treatment decisions.
• 80% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides increased their confidence in their ability to make an informed treatment decision.
• 62% of respondents said the Treatment Decision Guides helped them determine what treatment option was best for them.
• 87% of respondents confirmed the Treatment Decision Guides helped them communicate more effectively with their doctors.
